What is cultural burning?
Yurok and Karuk families are putting fire back on the land to bring back hazel, elk and open oak woodland. California outlawed it in 1850 and outlawed broadcast burning again in the 1930s. Senate Bill 310 reopened the door in 2024, and the Karuk Tribe signed the first agreement under it in February 2025.
